I had been hearing about this and reading at so many places. So, today I played a game with Network Solutions. I own this domain 1DollarDeal.com since the past few months. Only the .COM. All other TLDs have been vacant for all these months until this game was played. I checked at my regular registrar Name.com where they showed only the .COM as taken.
Then, I headed over to Network Solutions and did a search for 1dollardeal. They traced my IP coming from India and what do you have? They snap .CO.IN. See the top 3rd of the image. Then I added a second name in the search box, 100dollar (I own 100Dollar.biz) and searched again. See the middle portion of the image. This time they dropped off .CO.IN and snapped .ORG and .NET.IN. See the status of 100dollar too (only .COM .NET .INFO and .BIZ are previously taken).
A minute later, I added a third name DomainSocial, a forum I frequent (only .COM taken until now). Now, see how the kite strikes. Because my IP is from India, they snap up all the .IN domains and not to leave to chance, they also snap .CO.UK and .DE for all three names. Phut! Gone in 60 seconds...
I checked with all the 28 domains I own, 15 of them .COMs, and network solutions has snapped all the .INs, .CO.UK and .DE for all these names. They just stole 261 (29 x 9) domain names within a couple of minutes. And from what most of us have heard, they will hold on to these names for 4 days in the guise of name protection!
Hey! 2 can play a game. What if thousands or even hundreds of us domain owners descended on these guys at the same time and searched for 10 names each. Guess what? We can give 'em a run for their money!
